Chains done gone and finished!

Not that there was a race, but I had to move onto other projects and with my attention span of a hamster with ADD I knew I had to finish before moving on. Decided to use a simple grid as the original inspiration piece, but much closer (approx. and in grid). The back contains the design brought into modern times as I see it. It's ultimate destination is unclear, but it'll be someone with a strong personality. Thanks again Tonya for the chance to learn and try something new!

love doing letters

I used to teach Matt (now 18) his letters on our front steps by bending pine needles into the shapes of letters. I think that's why I love making these, it reminds me of those days when he was 2 and even the most mis-shapen pinestraw letters were worth clapping for. The blue is actually a little more deep cobalt like the blue so many amish women use in their dresses. Piecing the body, hich is almost done, into the letters will be a challenge. The body of the quilt is cobalt blue and black.

Laura here-So this is the trial run. I am really loving this pattern and I can see myself doing some more in pillow form. These individual components are 3in. finished.

Well, maybe I'll have 2 challenge projects. Still in love with that vibrant combination of electric blue and black and agrivated that I have to wait until Friday to get more fabric for my Roman Stripes, I searched the other sample Amish quilts. I had thought about doing a quilt like the one pictured about a year ago and seeing this unamed pattern, my interest was renewed. I'm not sure what anyone else sees in this pattern, but chains come to mind. I finally figured out the simplicity of the piecing- it's just a variation of a Rail Fence, and therefore will work wonkifully! I also had a gift card for Hobby Lobby from some dear friends who wanted to cheer me up last week and was able to get just the right blue and black. Here we go again...

Laura here, well my start was not as fabulous as I had hoped. My blues, which still await me, gave way to what seemed a wonderful idea in theory based on a Bible verse from the book of Isaiah. Practice is a different story. Sort of pleased with the direction now, although I have never worked with batiks before and hence am lamenting the fact that I am not able to use the dozens of different fabrics that I'm used to. How come what is meant to be an exercise in frugality (scrap quilting) always costs so dang much? *SIGH*

Roamin' Stripes

Laura here- A few years ago, wait a minute-ouch 20 years ago, I fell in love with antique Amish quilts. Never able to afford them, I had to be satisfied with collecting books depicting their glory. One of the things that amazed me about these wonderful quilts were their color and in particular the blues that seemed to vibrate, (remember 20 years ago we were knee deep in "colonial" blue) especially when set against a black background. This quilt reminded me of those blues I loved.

from a little cabin in the N. Georgia woods. I'm Laura, and a great fan of all things wonky. I started my liberated adventure after seeing Tonya's work in a magazine. Her BLOG was included in the article and after virtually dropping by, I started my first "wonky" quilt, a neighborhood of houses entitled "As For Me And My House". Eventually it was raffled off with the proceeds going to help purchase blankets for orphans in Afghanistan. I have a well season box of solids, recently discovered after 15 years in storage due to a labeling mistake. So, let the fun begin! Can't wait to see what everyone creates... leaning (a very accurate word for this project) towards the Roman Stripes.
