Plaidtastic, quilted, bound and done!

Inspired by Amish designs, driven to wonkiness, with a splash of batiks, and quilted with the spirit of Gee's Bend, it's plaidtastic!

Wow! everyone has come along way with their projects and they look fabulous! I left mine for so long, I almost forgot about it....but I was in the middle of projects and I thought I should do my letters...I really like the way the block pops and the letters just become part of the background...I love staring at this and am so pleased the way it is, but now I am afraid to quilt it...I would like to keep the main yellow squares clean and free of quilting...

One thought I had, was to machine quilt with invisible thread, lines through the plaid parts, criss-crossing, leaving the corner blocks and yellow outer blocks free of quilting, then grid quilting in black the borders. I could hand quilt it, but I have so many other projects that need to be hand quilted, that I don't want to add to that pile. I also want the block to be the main focus and not the quilting.

Block is done!

The block is done, now to do the background and some liberated letters...hmmm, well I like the black as background...but what to say? How big do I want to make it? the block measures 18 x18.

I could put 'Plaid' above and '-tastic!' below...? or make it round the corner... plaid on the left side and -tastic! on the top.... and then in what colours?

or I could just put my initials and 2010 on bottom right....doing the block was easy compared to this part.

Plaid-tastic begins...

Here is my selection of fabrics; I chose one multicolour batik to jazz it up. The batik will be replace the green squares from the original.

I cut one square out of it and I started my block, but then I realized that liberating it was going to be harder than I thought. My intincts were to make it even and straight...so I thought I would make my square less square, then everything to follow would automatically be wonky.

as I added rows things did get more wonky...but I made a conscious effort to match up seams...but not stressing about it, if it was not perfect.

my row would look like the strip above and then I would take my ruler and cut a straight line, but I could angle my line to make my strips more wedge-like...

decision made!

Ok! I made up my mind.....I am going to do the maple leave quilt. And if I have time, then I am going to do the trip around the world with the flying geese borders.

Now to get started! Good thing we have lots of snow forcasted for this weekend!

017 unnamed pattern: I call it Plaid-tastic!

Carol here, aka comicbooklady....I really like this block. I won't have time to make a huge quilt, so I want to concentrate on making the one block. I am fascinated with this block, I look at it and I want to know what the short cut is to making this block; it's like a puzzle. There has to be a quick way to make this block, only no one told me the secret!...but since this is to be an exercise in liberation, I have to do away with the shortcuts and rebuild this block from the centre green square and out. To "liberate" this block, I think, I will not make all the rows even widths, so I am hoping it will achieve a wonky, stretched look, but we shall see. I love the colours used in this one, but I don't have those, so next I will search my stash to substitute the red, green, black and white and gray (or is that a light purple, can't really tell).
