Half way there

Have my Chinese coins set in their strips. NOw on to the borders. Waffling about letters. Not sure I want to do that, but have another idea in mind. We shall see.

The Back Is Done!

The back is done! The center medallion (name panel) measures approximately 30" x 40" ~ and, because I had nothing on hand with enough continuous yardage, I created a pieced back fabrics that appear in the front of the quilt. [both photos will enlarge when double-clicked]

I admit to being heavily influenced by our years spent living in Indiana Amish country ~ my quilt is much more Midwestern than Lancaster-ish (summertime meant blue skies, golden sunshine, and colorful flowers).

Of course, the top is still on the design wall, not at all stitched together. But, the binding strips are cut and the back is done! Woo Hoo!!!!

broken dishes

                                I like this one so  much better than the wedding ring quilt I tried before.......now I just have to play with the layout until it feels right.  these are good sized hst and they will finish at 4.5".

More Amish craziness

I've been making more crazy blocks, nearly enough to get around the whole quilt so far. I need to rearrange them a bit for contrast between the bigger and smaller chunks of colour, but you get the idea. I've heard calls for more red from Victoria and Julie, so I've tried putting a strip of red at the top and bottom (only top pictured here) to make it a rectangle.

What do you think? I'm thinking it needs to either go inside the navy border, or on top and bottom of the crazy patches. I want to get this to throw size (about 50 by 60, so I will need another border after the crazy patches.

Center Square

Brenda here with another go at this challenge. I decided to combine my two previous starts (the words and the strip piecing) in a liberated version of #31, Center Square. The center square is framed with bigger and bigger strips in different values. I've done that, and then framed the wide borders with a narrow one to provide a break between the crazy piecing and the calm center borders, which lead to the words "Be Well." Sort of Amish Zen, if that makes any sense. Right now it's 36 inches square, and after the crazy border I'm going to put wide borders top and bottom to turn it into a rectangle like on the original, then another border to get it to throw size. In the inspiration quilt, the quilting motifs brings the quilt to life, so stay tuned for that.

Well I have finally decided on "Broken Dishes" plate 25, page 74.
It has more sparkle than what I have tried to do
here.  This just looks dark and dull to me and has no zing.  I'm moving on!

In the Meantime . . .

Here's a "work in progress" photo for what will become the name panel on the back of my first LAGT quilt.

And before this first flimsy has been assembled, LAGT Quilt No. 2 has announced itself! It wants to be created with greens and creams ~ inspired by the strong contrasts and on-point layouts showcased in

075: Rocky Road to California (Mifflin County, PA initialed "LAY"c.1930 72"x74")

043: Roman stripes (Holmes County, OH c.1930 86"x63")

and Gwen’s String Quilt Set on Point (page 21, Liberated String Quilts).

There WILL be a word on the front ~ in fact, the word may come about before the blocks!

I have not abandoned my bucket list liberated wedding ring quilt ~ that plan is still actively gestating & the stack of sketches continues to grow ~ I’m hoping the mantra “good things come to those who wait” will apply!

Now, if I could just find the time to sit down and stitch . . .

Medallion Center Components

I haven't been able to get much sewing in, but after a fun yesterday I have this

these are strip components that I may sew together to make string blocks like the ones in #100 Crazy Star. Some of you picked that one and were just sewing things together and it looked fun, so decided to make some too. I'm thinking this will be in my medallion center:

This is all just playing right now, making bits before I decide how to put them together. I'm going to do some letters to toss into the mix for the center. My problem right now is I love how this center looks put together like this, rather than using them to make the Crazy Star blocks where they come in at all sorts of angles. That way is definitely more lively, but this has a simplicity I like too.

As far as class stuff goes, have you all picked a quilt to be inspired by? You can see from my work that you don't have to choose just one quilt - you can grab bits and pieces from many. Have you got your fabrics? At a certain point, it's better to just go with your gut and PICK rather than overthinking it. I do that myself and it doesn't get me anywhere. Just sew.

So that is what she's got and I must say it does look good AND I've finished the top before the deadline - woohoo!

I will get round to piecing the letters for the back "Liberated Amish Get Together 2010" and my initials, but in the meantime we have sun and the garden is beckoning.

Thanks to Ton for holding yet another fabulous class and I'll let you know how I get on with the back sometime before the deadline in June.

Letters Done!

This is so much fun!! I have my letters done! It was nice to sit and sew on a wonderful Sunday.

Now it is back to work . Thank God i love my job. But if i have time tonight i will try to put my letter blocks together and the borders on! Happily Quilting Natalie Carlton

Decisions Decisions

I've done the two inner borders and am now dithering between putting the words round the outside as another border, or leaving it is as and putting the words on the back.

Here we have the quilt at the moment;

which I prefer, but am still not sure.  

DH says it's yuk, but he's a man so what does he know!

 

I don't think I want to hide the letters on the back, especially that pink "i".

KnitOneQuiltTooKristin: Roman Stripes update 2

Making progress here. I'm not sure about whether to add the basket handles or not and can't come up with a word. Maybe I'll get some inspiration this week! I have a retreat with Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran starting Thursday and then a solids class with Gwen. Can't wait!
