Sad News

Christmas 2009 I made a quilt for my Son in Law.  He is a huge GA Bulldog fan.  When my Daughter washed it for the first time disaster  struck.  The black I used for the inner border just fell apart.

Well, this is a sad enough by itself but the real problem is I made my Liberated Amish quilt from the same black fabric.

I can't believe I didn't notice the fabric was rotten.
I guess procrastinating isn't all bad because at least I haven't quilted it yet.

oh no. no no no. awful news. I can see appliqueing over the inner border of the finished quilt. maybe no words needs to be enjoyed as a top only. I'm sorry. Please tell me though that was black fabric from the 80s (I had some disintegrate too) and not something of recent vintage.

Oh my gosh! That's horrible news.

That is so horrible! At the BIQR retreat one of the ladies told us a similar story...she had old fabric on the bolt that disintegrated over time...she found that if she washed her fabric right away that it lasted longer. In other words items that she had made from the same bolt did not disintegrate if it had been pre-washed...

oh I'm so sorry. I've heard bad stories about black fabric. :/

What a disappointment! I tend to use navy blue instead of black.

The quilt says it all "no words necessary".

rats and double rats. that is horrible. I love that quilt, love it, love it. It is such an inspirational piece. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the best results if you decide to wash it.

I am so sorry! I had a very similar experience late last year - see my blog: hudsonnewsandmuse.blogspot, November 18, 2010. Same thing, old black fabric. What I did: hand washed the pieced units already completed, and discarded the ones that bled like crazy. Some seemed ok. I did continue with two projects with this fabric, as they will not be washable items, just for the wall. I did throw out the remaining black fabric however. Good luck!

I've seen this happen a couple of times with black fabrics from the 80's and early 90's...as one commenter said if the fabric is washed it holds up better. I was told it was the harsher dyes that cause the "rot."

You can applique a black strip over the GA Bulldog innerborder and repair the damage (at least hide it well!)

This happened to me when I was getting ready to hand quilt a small quilt for a Keepsake quilting competition..... yep the stitching in the border ripped the the fabric....and darn was it cute! I still have it but what do you do with it.....its trash right?

Sorry to hear its still happening.
Because I love black in a quilt!
