finished top

After having added to my stash of Cherrywood fabrics, and received a nice donation from Librarygal Pam, I was finally ready to make some letters and words. I used 1.5" and 1" strings for the letters - so they are quite big!

Some of you will know that Quilt it is the name of my blog - could not resist integrating that phrase. Reading the book, I noticed how "making do" was a central value of the Amish. So these two phrases kind of stuck in my head, and I love how they sound together. I was planning on using them in the opposite order - make do, quilt it. But then I made a little mistake in choosing the colors for the letters (yellow letters on purple background) so I had to switch the two around. Or to make do - you could say....

It's a bit hard to get a true picture of the dark purple colors - still winter...
I am considering hand quilting this in big baptist fans or machine quilt a diagonal grid. Not sure yet, but my hands are saying they need a rest from hand quilting...

Loved making the letters, have started planning another all letters quilt. And there is so many pretty Amish quilts to be inspired by....

wip

There has been a bit of progress. Sadly the poor winter light makes it difficult to get a true picture of the colors.

I have put together the blocks in sashing. Quite scrappy (liberated), using every piece (leftovers from the 2 Cherrywood Grab bags I started with). Not having a big amount of fabric to begin with was a bit liberating, too. I just used what I had.

The dark purple in the frame is a piece of Kona Cotton. I think it gives a nice difference in texture and depth of color.

Next step is the letters and numbers.... Just waiting for more fabric to play with ; )
Wish me luck...

a little start

I plunged into my precious Cherrywood fabric Scrap bags (small pieces, but a nice variation in colors) and started cutting.

My "stash" is small, so I am aiming for a small crib size quilt. Here is my blocks so far:

Not sure about layout, yet. I have some different ideas to try out. I would like to keep it simple...

Since I don't have any bigger pieces of the Cherrywood, I will probably throw in some Kona cotton for borders and more.

Joining in the fun

Hi! This is Marit from Quilt it. I just received my LQII and have been enjoying reading it, great inspiration.

Years ago, Amish quilts was my introduction to quilts and quilting. Together with the quilts of Gees Bend they still make a strong impression on me, love the color and simple graphical design elements.

All the beauties in the Amish collection makes it hard to decide on a starting point. I have my eyes on this triangles quilt and this churn dash right now. Have to check on my stash and think about it.

This is a great challenge, thank you for hosting, Tonya!
