I did make this little quilt in 1989 completely by hand.....at the time I thought it was a masterpiece :0).

The best place I've found to buy solids is from the fabric shack. Fabricshack.com Great prices and you only pay for what it actually costs to ship. So Kona cotton is $3.99 a yard and they'll let you buy in small amounts less than a half yard. I've got no affiliation with the store, but had good experiences with them.
The site can be a little bit hard to navigate. Do a search on Bella and you will get all the Moda Bella solids. "kona solid" will get you all of those.
