Finally Getting Started

Hi all, Nancy here, as it turns out the weather here in San Diego is also perfect for sewing this weekend and I have finally started my liberated quilt. I too am using the Crazy Star for inspiration. Once I received my book I thought I would change my mind, but I kept going back to the Crazy Star. I started with lots of strips.

Just like every other quilting project I cut fabric and sew it back together. I am trying to get a lot of variety in the shapes, so I keep cutting and sewing! I can't wait to make the liberated star.

I`ve started my second!!

Hello again!! Oslo calling!! The winter-weather here in Oslo this weekend was perfect for staying within doors, sewing!! Windy, snowing, -10`C.......

My plan was to make a Lone Star-paper piecing.... but I found that not very liberating.....I got my book!! Liberated Quiltmaking II, and it realy make sense to me!! I think this way to make quilts match my personality. So this quilt above is my inspiration......

This turned out to be more Log Cabin than Crazy Quilt.

So that it would be quick to sew, I made the cain.

This is so far I have come.... but there is still plenty to do. Anne:-)

I think the little pink piggie is done

Hello again - Lynley here from Canberra, Australia. I added some more pink to my pinwheels crib quilt, in a border, and I think that's where it will stop! I used a liberated blunt sawtooth border which was heaps of fun to make, and gives another splash of colour round the edges.

I had no end of trouble trying to think up words ... everything I thought of was far too serious for this little quilt. Even putting my initials seemed too sober, and anything in uppercase was completely out of the question. So, some days, you end up with a little pink pig.

The photos are of the quilt on the batting and backing, just before I pinned it this afternoon. Now it's in the queue to be hand-quilted. I can guarantee that stage will be a bit slower, especially given it's in a line behind two queen-size quilts ... and TV is just terrible at the moment. No reason to sit on the sofa every evening and quilt!

Quick Update

It was a work week filled with overtime . . . but I have finally gotten this many blocks up on the design wall.

Still not sure where this will end up ~ but I really like what is happening so far!

Yesterday I finished sewing the raw blocks. Here are 6 piles of 8 blocks.
Today I shall cut them straight into 9 1/2 "squares and hopefully start to sew them together.

Quilt Top Done

I finished my quilt top!!!!  

As I mentioned before, I made the center "liberated" by varying the sizes of the 36 blocks rather than making them uniform.  The aqua and black stripes are also liberated in that I didn't measure the widths so they vary in size, and they are a little wavy.  This quilt is headed to Montana. The letters I pieced represent our "brand" in Big Sky.  

I haven't decided yet how I will quilt this.  I am also wondering what color to use for the binding.  Should I repeat the red or maybe the dark color used for the inner border?

Thank you for the advice on the borders and the letters.  This has been so much fun.  I hope to make another one.  I am enjoying seeing all the great ideas y'all have come up with.

Progress Report

Rene' again here with an updated picture.

I've added the stripes.  I'm thinking of doing a thin red border around this.  My question is what color to use for a wide border and then what color for binding.  Any suggestions?  Oh, and then there is the question of the letters.  I know what word(s) I am going to use, but can't decide on colors.

I have limited time at my sewing machine these days, so Liberated Stars are amazing. I've never worked this way before, but the minimal prep time, no measuring, no stressing is great! I'm making headway in my pack of hand dyes, can't wait to get to the lime greens and turqoises!

My first Blog Post

That was the first time I put a photo in a blog post-so apologies for the tiny, faraway photo. And for some reason the link to the Bricks in Bars Amish quilt isn't actually a link. I'll get better at this.

Started Bricks in Bars

I've stitched some bricks together in a limited palette using fabrics I already had. I think the bars will be a deep dark navy, though for now I've put the bricks on top of a navy print that I have on hand. I'll also try black for the bars, as Clare suggested to me. I originally had bricks made of 2 marbled fabrics-I took those out, and I'm going to also take out the light navy mottled. (The colors always look much clearer and brighter in photos than on the design wall in my studio).
The original Bricks in Bars (http://www.pbase.com/brownsf/image/85044737) has a wonderful life to it and a uniformity in the bricks that I really like. My version is missing that, and it is now becoming a Coins quilt. I've been in a "navy mood" which is why I started out with these fabrics; I think I'll continue to play with this-and maybe add more colors.
