My quilt top hasn't progressed much since my last post.
I have decided on a black backing and border. Someone had asked about the size; someone else wondered how I was going to quilt this.
It is 27.5 square. As to how to quilt it, I have no idea. Usually, if the quilt is really special, I will send it off to a professional longarmer. I think I will quilt this one myself. Maybe even hand quilt it.
I really don't want to mess this up as I am pleased with it so far. I would really love to hear your suggestion. Thank you in advance for all your brilliant ideas!

I think it's going to be fabulous anyway you quilt it. I started and inch grid on mine, why I don't know. It's taking forever!
This is just stunning and beyond perfection!!!! I absolutely love it!
I think I'd do either freehand fans (what a surprise) or a cable or something in the border. But go in the ditch around the letters and have the fans/cable/something else entirely not go over the letters. And then either wavy or straight lines in the blue and black strips. and something in each different square rectangle, depending on what they seemed to need. and how much quilting you actually want to do.
If I can add my 2 cents worth? I like the idea of fans or something with curves for the border. For the inner squares/rectangles: maybe 1/4" inside each seam line. For the stripes: gently curving lines. You might use a hera marker for those waves to get nicely curving waves.
No matter what, it's really eye catching, Rene.
those open areas would look great with a cable.....what about echo stitching around the letters.
Oh the possibilities :0)
Happy sewing
I like the curvy stitching lines too. Border, good suggestions already, fans or cables or grid lines. I think something curvy though. Hand quilt it, at 27 sq, it's not overwhelming.
Thank you all for the helpful advice. I appreciate the encouragement to go for the hand quilting. I like the idea of the cable in the wide border, stitching inside the seams for the squares, and the wavy lines in the blue and black strips. I can do this!
I also vote for a cable border. Take a look at the border of the Triangles crib quilt. I think it's the cover quilt on the book and is #93 on the website.
My favorite book on designing quilting elements to fit your specific quilt is Gwen Marston's "Quilting With Style." It's out of print but maybe you could get it from the library.

I don't have any quilting advice for you, but I love this.
